I don't know about most people but 2009 was a blur and a terrible time for pet owners, and animals in need. Unfortunately so many people were in a situation where they could no longer keep their pets. I know that if I was ever presented with that situation would probably be one of the worst days of my life. There are many reasons they can't keep their pets but if one of them is healthcare/veterinarian visits - they can rest easier until they get back on their feet. There is a company called Carecredit. Carecredit handles many different health/surgical procedures through low interest financing and one of them is Veterinary care. The link is:

http://carecredit.com/vetmed/

I hope this helps and I pray that those who've had a hard last couple of years is going to finally have that break out year to start again and be successful. Personally I already can tell 2010 is going to be better - just by donations to animal orgs, general attitudes on animals/pets/responsibilites......and it has nothing to do with politics (thank god).

Here's to the year a lot of people (and animals) have looked forward to.

Bill and Barney

So I rescued two guinea pigs along with some little dogs all of which I ended up keeping. 5 weeks in my mistake on who was a girl and who was a boy showed up: Barney is pregnant and he's now Betty. And they always hoped they would stay together if anything happened to them.

About two weeks after the Kelmses were both killed in a fatal motorcycle crash over the Labor Day weekend, their family and a Burr Ridge shelter is looking for someone to adopt the pack.

They've had inquiries about one or two of the dogs, but no one has stepped up yet to take all four, said Kathy Deets, manager of the Chicago Canine Club in Burr Ridge.

"Their last wish was that they could be adopted together and they are an interesting little pack,'' said Deets. "They're just best friends, these four dogs."

They are 6-year-old Anacortes, a 47-pound female American Eskimo lab mix; 3-year-old Cedonia, a 34-pound female husky mix; 7-year-old Tacoma, a 92-pound male lab mix; and Everett, a 4-year-old, 47-pound, male Austrian Shepard lab mix.

She said the shelter has been boarding the dogs since the accident as a niece of the Kelmses searches for a home. Deets said the dogs have an unusually close bond and tend to hang out together in the shelter.

According to a letter posted on the shelter's web site: http://www.chicagocanineclub.com/site/pages/gallery.html by Kim Mayer, the Kelms' niece, the dogs were adopted over the past seven years.

"Their dogs were the only children they ever had,'' Mayer wrote.

Deets said she understands it will be difficult finding homes for all four dogs, and said they have had inquires from neighbors and friends of the Kelms.

"To adopt two dogs together is a huge challenge ... four could be impossible,'' said Deets.

But she said the dogs are very well-mannered and show signs that they were well taken care of by the owners. "The dogs are super sweet.''

The dogs, all rescued from area shelters, are spayed and neutered and are up to date on vaccines.

Adoption Application: http://www.chicagocanineclub.com/site/downloads/dog_adoption_application.pdf

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/09/home-sought-for-four-dogs-of-couple-killed-in-crash.html

Quicky List of upcoming Pet Events in Atlanta, GA

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

7th Annual Wags to Riches to benefit Atlanta Pet Rescue
For all the information, visit http://www.atlantapetrescue.org/www_ver2/events.htm#wags

Do you want to find amazing treasures at yard sale prices?

Decorate on a dime?

Over 500 items for sale: antiques, furniture, showroom samples, art and mirrors, fabric and pillows, lamps and shades, stationery, all tabletop, garden decor, outdoor furniture, estate items, jewelry, books, tapes and videos, boutique gifts, and much more.

100% of sales benefit our no-kill adoption center!

Where:
Rock Springs Plaza
1853 Piedmont Road
Atlanta GA 30324

When:
Early Bird Sale: Thursday, Sept. 17th 5pm to 7pm ($20 donation at the door)
Sale day #1: Friday, Sept. 18th 9am to 6pm
Sale day #2: Saturday, Sept. 19th 9am to 4pm
Sale day #3: Sunday, Sept. 20th 9am to 3pm

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

BOXERSTOCK 2009 to benefit Atlanta Boxer Rescue - http://www.atlantaboxerrescue.org/
Saturday, September 19th from 12pm - 10pm

Folks, come out to Dogma Doggie Day Care in Smyrna for this AWESOME event! http://www.dogmadogcare.com/
Tickets are only $10, and, there is going to be PLENTY of musical talent there. an English Springer Spaniel is 16 years old. I've had her since the year I became engaged to my husband. My previous dog at the time - Jodie (a blonde English Cocker Spaniel) became violently ill and within 36 hours was dead. My husband surprised me upon my return from a business trip at the airport with a 6 week old Maci. This is WAY before overbreeding, over population in shelters, animal rescue etc. became knowledgeable - she was my last "purchased" animal.

The last year has really shown the effects of aging...she can't see or hear as well, she's lost most of her muscle and is bony on her back, stiff when she walks and seems to have a little bit of dementia. With that said, she still trots down the stairs, eats twice a day and has no problem with performing duties outside. I have taken her to our vet to ensure that she is not suffering or sick. Heck, she actually had surgery last November to remove a non-cancerous tumor on her leg and that was the first time she'd been "under" since she was 6 months old! Blood test came back that her kidneys and other organs are functioning great so when people (particularly those that don't own any pets) make the comment of "why don't you just put her down?" I usually come back with "so you're saying that because your grandmother may or may not wear depends, hearing aid and glasses, that because she's old, you should put her down?"
That always produces a pause...yes Maci is old, smelly even, and a little irritating at times because I forget how old she is and that she's not capable of doing things like she has in the past.

More accidents to clean up, more helping her get up the stairs, longer time taken to eat, more bathes but this is what I signed up for - with ALL of my animals. Once they are yours and you've made the decision that they ARE yours, you stick it out through good times and bad, they'd do it for us.....without a thought.

I've had to put two dogs down - within 45 days of each other. One had cancer and was unresponsive to treatment, the other had congenital heart failure and had so much fluid in his body that it caused his heart to push up against his throat making it difficult to breathe. It was awful, sad, emotional but it was the right thing to do for them and I know they were grateful to be out of their misery.

Pets are a lifetime - theirs - not a convenience that conforms to what OUR schedule dictates. Love them while you have them with all that you can and pray they go silently, easily in their sleep. If they don't and you know it's time - do the right thing and not for the self-serving act because you don't want to loose them.

CORPORATE SPONSOR CONTACTS FOR PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

I went through and tried to pick the deepest pockets among the corporate sponsors for the Philadelphia Eagles. How to continue making money while doing what I love and giving back to the subject matter that I have ADORED since I was a toddler....animals!!!! Questions like: What do I need to do to try and get the word out about animals needing homes, laws, abuse, etc etc etc....those of you that sacrifice a huge amount of your time to these causes know the daily heartaches, honestly I can say it has caused many nights of tears for myself. By-the-way, those of you that love animals and do things as simple as seeing an animal on the side of a busy road, even when you may be on your way somewhere important - stop and coax the animal to you to take them somewhere, anywhere more safe for the moment are in the top 5 of my list of heroes. With that said, it was nice to witness just some true, cute, innocent animal antics outside my home recently. I found it funny and fascinating at the same time.

I was hearing this ridiculously loud "mocking" sound - so yes, from a mockingbird but then there was a sound that seemed to want to mock the same but didn't come out quite the same as momma mock. It was hilarious! First of all, I've never seen (except maybe a close resemblance of mourning doves) baby birds being larger than their parent...this booger was not only bigger, but fatter, louder and demanding. I must admit, mockingbirds are not my favorite bird - although aggressive in demanding attention, their just not that "pretty" (I mean come on, the dove's are angelic for god's sake!) but this baby mock was a cute little lovebug, um, lovemock - I watched him hop around my patio, hop up to the table, hop to the back of the chair, hop on the top of the umbrella, and hop to the top of the outdoor bar (no underage drinking-thank you very much) all the while screeching for his/her mom to just throw him/her a bone/worm/straw/flower/nut which did not happen so he/she just continued to hop around while the next character came into play - a chipmunk joined the two on the patio after he ran from the covered porch with some stolen plant material from my potted plants. Mind you, this chipmunk (or his friends/family) I have witnessed, actually reclines on my outdoor patio couch. I'm pretty sure the chipper thought it was purchased for him - whatever, I'm glad someone gets to relax on it!

Anyway the most fascinating of this entire observation is when I let out one of my dogs (my 109 lb lab, Winnie) the baby mockingbird AND it's momma were not too interested in Winnie. The momma mockingbird dive-bombed Winnie a couple of times as a warning even. Then Winnie went inside and I watched the chipmunk scurry out and look at the baby mock, and his/her mom and they all seem to have an understanding that "it's all good"...and the chipmunk continued to eat WHATEVER he/she could find and the Mock family kept up with their mock screams...although so sweet to hear, it was a simple, nice, day for the animals and those that were lucky to observe.

Is your dog cool?

This is a FANTASTIC idea and life saving website - get on the bandwagon and help spread the word!!!

Here's a couple of fun events in Atlanta that are coming up very soon.....

Come out and have a beer, and hang out in Grant Park on Sunday, and
help Animal Action Rescue continue to help the MANY animals they have
in their program. The group has joined forces with the 35+ year, established Animal Adoption Center of Lindenwold, NJ to pull resources together and continue saving hundreds of animals from all over, especially in the states that use very inhumane and cruel euthanasia practices. There next stop is Georgia. This is a major supply and donation drive to personally hand deliver to the shelters that need help the most. She woke up sneezing 3-4 times in a row which is nothing unusual. However, because she was still laying down on the hardwood floor, she repeatedly hit her head on the floor as she sneezed (it was too many sneezes in too short of time for her to "get up"). Once the sneezing stopped she stood up and I noticed her left ear (the part hanging down) looked as though someone stuck a tube in it and blew it up like a balloon!

I have NEVER in all the years of owning dogs come across something like this and it scared me to death. Not just the fact that I was afraid she was in pain but what if it was some sort of blood clot that would travel straight to her brain and kill her instantly!!??? Okay, I get a little freaked over my animals when something is wrong. I'm sure that I am not preaching to the choir on that one. So upon extensive research I came across many pet owners and pet health sites that discussed this phenom.

First and foremost you need to be sure there is not an ear infection that is causing this. Since I witnessed the actual injury and know my dog very well in terms of her ear infections, I was certain that was not the case. If it's the same situation for your dog I would suggest going the route that I took. After reading the unsatisfactory results and complications that run as high as 90% in the surgery performed to "drain" the ear, I decided to try the "wait and see" method. Many pet owners had done the same with great results. I did see a few posts that described some of the ears were a little "wrinkly" at the end but I think over time that will be normal as well.

So here we are today and the fluid has finally drained/absorbed itself back into her body (that's what hematoma's do) to unveil her old ear. She was never in pain, she was not going to require surgery that may or may not have actually made the situation worse and I didn't have to worry about taping her ears on top of her head and embarrassing her to the other animals!

AWESOME VIP Pet Transportation

No more sticking your pets in the belly of a plane!!!!

Angel's Pet Sitting Service is run by a caring individual that's been in the business over 20 years!
